Opportunities within
the Division of General Studies

DGSociety

Jenni Kotowski, Academic Advisor: “DGSociety is a group of students, both current DGS students and former DGS students, who meet twice a month to talk about programming opportunities for DGS students.”

Brandi Marinko, Communication ‘11, DGSociety Member: “It’s basically a group of students in the Division of General Studies who really want to help the kids in their major further explore their majors along with them.”

Janelle Jones, Communication ‘11, DGSociety Member: “My advisor nominated me to be in DGSociety.”

Chris Armstrong, Assistant Director, Admissions & Honors: “They’re very instrumental in helping us with events like Majors and Minors Fair, our Apply Yourself workshops, and other events on campus.”

Jenni Kotowski, Academic Advisor: “Some of the benefits of being a member of DGSociety is to build on your leadership skills and to work on your teamwork – to have a positive impact on your college.”

Apply Yourself Workshop

Brandi Marinko, Communication ‘11: “I have been on the Division of General Studies Society for three years now, and I actually helped put together the Apply Yourself Conference.”

Jenni Kotowski, Academic Advisor: “What it is is it’s three workshops that students come to in one night.  They get to talk about how to build your resume as you get ready to apply to a college, how to work on an essay when applying to a college, and how to get the most out of your experience once you’ve declared your major.”

Janelle Jones, Communication ‘11: “We help people with resumes, and linking their major to careers, and just give a lot of information about you know, going from being in college to going to a career.”

Brandi Marinko, Communication ‘11: “I finded it to be extremely helpful because in fact I attended the workshop one year and used all of their tips to get an internship last summer.”

James Scholar Program

Chris Armstrong, Assistant Director, Admissions & Honors: “Yeah, the James Scholar Honors program that has been on campus for a long time – every college participates or has a James Scholar Honors program.”

Brandi Marinko, Communication ‘11, James Scholar: “One of the benefits is that you get to register before everybody else does for classes so you’re almost guaranteed to get those classes you want that are sometimes nearly impossible to get into as freshmen.”

Chris Armstrong, Assistant Director, Admissions & Honors: “Students have great access to faculty and working on current research, access to the library stacks.”

Alexander Crisci, Electrical Engineering ‘11, James Scholar: “I applied for a James Scholar after my first semester of freshman year.  When I transferred into Engineering, my James Scholar went with me – it’s just different requirements in the college.”

Brandi Marinko, Communication ‘11, James Scholar: “And basically all you’re required to do is maintain a 3.5 or above average in your classes, as well as complete one honors project per semester.”

Chris Armstrong, Assistant Director, Admissions & Honors: “Students who are in our James Scholar Honors program have the opportunity to join one of the honors teams around events such as volunteering, social, creative problem solving.”

Jenni Kotowski, Academic Advisor: “There are so many options at Illinois that you don’t even know about so really embrace that and enjoy the exploring opportunity that DGS provides.”
