Welcome to the Division of General Studies (DGS). DGS serves in the capacity of the “undergraduate college” for students who are Undeclared at the University of Illinois. We are responsible for serving as the “student academic affairs dean's office” for over 3,000 Illinois students each year and over 1,500 new students entering each fall.
Our professional staff members are committed to supporting students’ academic and personal success at the University of Illinois. Students can come to us to discuss potential majors, make appropriate course plans for upcoming semesters, talk about the process of declaring majors at Illinois, understand degree requirements, learn about campus support services, and discuss their academic progress in classes and many other topics.
In addition to academic advising, we talk with prospective students who are interested in DGS as well as coordinate our James Scholars Honors Program, the Enrichment Experience Program (EEP), our First-Year Experience course (GS 101), and our Program for Academic Support and Success (PASS).
You’ll find a multitude of resources on our website to assist students with the process of choosing a major at Illinois as well as understand academic policies and procedures. Be sure to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor at least once a semester to ensure you are making progress toward declaring your major and earning your degree at Illinois.
We’re excited that you are part of the Division of General Studies and look forward to meeting with you!
